NEW TOWN, EDINBURGH – Edinburgh, like so many cities, looks its best in the sun. When the rays hit it just right, the sandstone skyline shines like gold.
And shine it has over the past few days – we’ve had a glorious spell of weather over here.
The spell of good weather made me wonder what’s been going on in the solar energy sector – which had an extraordinary winter funnily enough, and then began until the sun started shining.
This is the aptly named TAN index of solar energy stocks: while it remains elevated, its sun has set somewhat:
While the rise last year was very impressive indeed, the index isn’t half as high as it was in 2008:
While my colleague Nickolai vented on Monday about some of the many issues with solar, one has to wonder if this index (there’s an ETF which tracks it) will at least return to its 2008 levels now that there’s so much more government-sanctioned green hype. Food for thought…
With any luck this will be addressed by one of the many energy experts who’ll be speaking at our Beyond Oil Summit, which kicks off today. Be you passionate about green energy, or just trying to make a fat buck off the stocks involved in it, there’s something for everyone in there. Don’t miss it – tune in here.
All the best,
