Ever wonder who founded our newsletter publishing company? Not Southbank Investment Research, but our friends in the US who preceded us. Well, it’s time to meet him.
Bill Bonner and his wife, Elizabeth, have spent much of 2020 hunkered down in the family bolthole up in Salta, a far-flung province in the northern reaches of Argentina bordering Bolivia and Chile.
They arrived there by “dumb luck”, as Bill calls it, landing shortly before coronavirus spread to Argentina earlier this year and, due to the subsequent travel restrictions, have remained there, in their mountainous gulch, ever since.
But perhaps we ought to consider that, what Bill humbly calls “dumb luck” probably isn’t quite so purely serendipitous. I’m sure you’ve noticed how “prepared” people always seem to be “fortunate” when things go awry, as they are wont to do.
They say fortune favors the bold… but it also favors, on balance, those who made contingency plans… saving through the fat years in order to survive through the lean ones.
In this conversation, Bill and Joel Bowman talk about the importance of having somewhere you can retreat to during times of crisis – be that some kind of health crisis, political upheaval and civil unrest, financial collapse, or the proverbial black swan you couldn’t possibly have foreseen.
