Something a little different in today’s note. Today’s Capital & Conflict is a postcard of sorts, from our company’s founding father – Bill Bonner – living out on his ranch in Argentina.
Many of you will be familiar with Bill’s daily insights on the political and economic decline of the US (some may remember a video interview I recorded with him back in 2019).
In this private podcast, he shares his macro view on the world from the plains of the Pampas – on debt, empire, rising social unrest and the funny money underpinning it all, hosted by analyst Joel Bowman. I’ll leave you with Joel’s description of their conversation – and I hope you enjoy it.
In an era of unwavering certainty and ideological dogmatism, where the prevailing consensus is so utterly self-assured that its obsequious acolytes remain ever at the ready to “Cancel” anyone who dares deviate from the accepted wisdom, Bill Bonner brings to the conversation the most offensive, intolerable punctuation sign of them all: The question mark.
Where others sharpen their exclamation points, preparing to engage in ALL CAPS battle royales in anonymous online comment sections, Bill scratches his head and wonders, aloud… “Hmm…”
He remains, in accordance with one of his own, oft-cited dictums, “Sometimes right. Sometimes wrong. And always in doubt.”
When it comes to slaying sacred cows – on both the left and the right – Bill operates what might be called an equal opportunity abattoir, taking aim at unsound money, phony bailouts, make-work boondoggles, would-be world improvers, the welfare-warfare state, inner-beltway grifters and anyone claiming to know what they cannot possibly comprehend, something Hayek once called the “presence of knowledge.”
I caught up with Bill recently, when he called in from his ranch, located in the remotest mountain ranges in far northern Argentina…
Bill shared his thoughts on everything from Life in the time of COVID-19, the problem with spending other people’s money, and lessons to be learned from a century of unflinching commitment to bonehead ideas as applied down here on the Pampas…
All the best,
Boaz Shoshan
